Over the next 12 years I continued at the conservatory until I had obtained 2 degrees. Then, in 1994, I enrolled at the Rotterdam Conservatory where Hariprasad Chaurasia had started teaching. Over the course of two years in India much was covered. This process would go on and on, hour after hour and day after day, until the rāgas and Hariprasad‘s approach became deeper and deeper. Hari-ji‘s classes were very simple – he would mostly just begin playing a phrase and then leave room for me (or us when there were group classes) to repeat what he had just played. With the extensive recordings and touring of Pandit Chaurasia, the North Indian bansuri is now known all over the world as a special instrument with unique expressive abilities. Musicians such as Pannalal Ghosh drew more intensely from the vocal tradition of North Indian music, while more recent innovators, such as Pundit Hariprasad Chaurasia have drawn much from instrumental technique. What is especially unique about the bansuri is that it is able to draw on both the vocal and instrumental traditions of Indian music. This much deeper tone and the great expansion of technique developed originally by Pannalal Ghosh has made the bansuri into the very well respected instrument it is today, within the classical music world of North India. With the innovations brought about by Pannalal Ghosh, who was a disciple of the great Indian master Allaudhin Khan, the bansuri was extended to a larger instrument of more than 30 inches.

It was felt that this instrument was not able to express the full import and richness found in the classical ragas of Indian music and was mainly for light music or short classical pieces. Measurements are in inches and can vary slightly (LH = Left Hand, RH = Right Hand).Until the late 1950’s and 1960’s, the bamboo flute of North India had been thought of as mainly a folk instrument and usually not more than 14 inches long. The following measurements are the distance from the center of the 1st hole to the center of the 3rd hole for each hand. If you have smaller hands, you may be unable to reach all of the finger holes. NOTE: the longer the flute, the wider the required finger span. The correct notes are achieved by piercing the seasoned bamboo with hot iron rods in precise positions along the length. The longer it is seasoned the better the flute. The cut bamboo is then treated, dried and stored for years until it is properly seasoned. Only Bamboo of 3 to 4 years old and of the proper diameter can be used. This bamboo only grows in the interior forests of Assam. The Bansuri flutes are made from only one type of bamboo, called cinchor. Each flute requires years of preparation and then concentrated attention to details. One must know the materials as well as the craft and one must have patience. Becoming a perfect flute maker takes a long time. It can happen that they sometimes sound slightly out of tune to the western ear. The standard quality of the Indian bansuris produce a quite beautiful sound, but their tuning is often not exactly to the western standard notes. This technique also simplifies the playing of longer bansuris. The finger holes have to be precisely covered either fully or half by the phalanxes of the fingers and not by the fingertips.

All half notes, accidentals and microtones are produced by a unique fingering system. It is one of the oldest musical instruments. The bansuri is a transverse flute from India, literally from the words bans (bamboo) and suri. It may be played on the rare occasion when you need to play the Ni in the lower octave. Its main purpose is to give greater accuracy in the upper octaves. The seventh hole is optional and rarely played. The dominate hand plays the lower three holes. The pitch indicated for the bansuri means the flute will play that pitch with the first 3 holes covered. It is made from a single piece of bamboo with seven holes.
